Classified Staff Leadership Academy: Engage, Transform, Succeed

Classified Staff Leadership Academy: Engage, Transform, Succeed On July 27 to 29, six members of the NOVA classified staff participated in the 2016 Classified Staff Leadership Academy at the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) office in Richmond. Those who attended included Director of Campus Operations Anil Manchanda (AL), Campus Registrar/ Student Services Manager Margaret Omwenga (AN), High School Outreach Coordinator Cathy Hall (LO), Administrative Assistant Cindy Clink (MA), Computer Lab Manager Imran Kukdawala (MEC) and Campus Financial Aid Manager Tykesha Myrick (WO).

Dr. Abigail Stonerock, the VCCS Office of Professional Development director, said, “This week, we come together not only to share leadership lessons learned through experience, but also to impart the values, principles and philosophies that directly impact student success and retention.” Stonerock facilitated the academy.

The three-day conference was packed with professional development, self-awareness and networking events, including interaction with various college presidents, vice presidents, VCCS senior leaders and VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois. Key themes included being a positive change agent, being mindful of the role each person plays in achieving organizational and student success and enhancing communication through careful listening.

Dr. John Capps, president of Central Virginia Community College, summed the academy up best by saying, “The heart of leadership is selflessness.”
