Rosaelena “Rosie” O’Neil, a member of the NOVA College Board representing Arlington County, has been elected as an at-large member of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Board. O’Neil was one of nine candidates elected last week to the 26-member board and will serve a three-year term. The two main functions of the ACCT Board involve national-level advocacy as well as trustee education to strengthen community college leadership.

“As a trustee from one of the largest community colleges in the country, Rosaelena O’Neil represents a diverse and dynamic student body,” said ACCT President and CEO J. Noah Brown. “Her business acumen and impressive experience as a federal administrator at the National Security Council and the Treasury Department will bring important insights to the ACCT Board.”

The ACCT is a nonprofit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the United States and beyond. A major voice of community college trustees to the president, U.S. Congress, the departments of Education and Labor and more, ACCT educates community and technical college trustees through annual conferences focused on leadership development and advocacy, as well as through publications and online and face-to-face institutes and seminars.

“Rosie is a valued member of the NOVA College Board and an important advocate for education in this region,” said Todd Rowley, NOVA Board chairman. “With this appointment, she furthers her commitment to community college students across the nation as well as at NOVA.”

NOVA President Scott Ralls said, “The ACCT is an important organization to represent the important work done by community colleges nationally and globally. Rosie O’Neil has represented well one of America’s largest community colleges, and she is well-prepared to help lead at the national level.”

O’Neil is associate director of the Landegger Program in International Business Diplomacy at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. She received an M.B.A. from Harvard University Business School and a bachelor’s in international economics with honors in International Business Diplomacy from Georgetown. She has worked in both the public and private sectors, holding positions at the National Security Council; the U.S. Department of the Treasury; J.P. Morgan, Financial Advisory; and M&A, Latin America. Her areas of specialty include strategy development, program development and management, academic and career advising.

NOVA College Board members serve a term of four years, and O’Neil will serve on NOVA’s Board until June 2017. She also serves as a board member for Arlington Public Schools, where she is a member of the Career, Technical and Adult Education Committee and, from 2011-2013, she co-chaired the APS Advisory Council on Instruction. She is also an Eagle Scout Coach and a member of Leadership Arlington.
