Manassas Hosts October Brown Bag Sessions On October 12, the Manassas Campus hosted a day of Brown Bag Sessions titled “Our Teaching & Learning. Our Health. Our Campus and College Community.” These October Brown Bag sessions were facilitated by a variety of speakers who encouraged participants to explore the multifaceted issues associated with academic life. Topics included “The Graphic Syllabus: Communicating Your Course Via Visualization” by Dr. Bo Yang; “Arthritis: Get a Grip” by Amy Moore from CommonHealth; “Come Out and Learn about the Manassas Faculty and Staff Book Club” by Dr. Laura Casal; and “zSpace 3-D Monitor Training – Put on a Pair of zSpace Glasses and Experience the Magic!” by Muhammad Iftikhar.

Throughout the day, participants shared their experiences, asked questions and discussed how the various topics could be implemented in their professional roles. For example to enhance teaching and learning, participants were introduced to a graphic syllabus. In the session, they learned why this tool might increase student success in the classroom, then reviewed implementation tools such as Gliffy, infographic, concept map and Prezi.

The health topic of the day focused on arthritis, a condition not limited to the elderly. After realizing that many arthritis symptoms limit abilities to function at optimum levels, participants practiced techniques and developed personalized strategies to enhance self-care. Next, faculty and staff were provided an opportunity to enhance collegiality and peer interactions during an organizational meeting for a campus book club.

Finally, the day ended with another teaching and learning presentation. The final session demonstrated resources for virtual reality education and application in the classroom. Feedback about the sessions were positive, with participants leaving encouraged and energized to take the first steps to implementation.

The event was co-sponsored by Campus Community Relations, Teacher2Teacher, the Manassas Campus New Faculty Mentorship Program, the College and Manassas Campus Achieving the Dream Team (ATD) and the Manassas Campus Library.
