First- and second-year dental hygiene students from the Medical Education Campus (MEC) along with the Northern Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association and Fairfax County Early Head Start Program held an Oral Health Fair at the Fairfax Government Center February 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. as part of the pediatric dental hygiene educational experience. Early head starters and their families were invited to play games and make special crafts while at the same time received free dental screenings, learned about oral hygiene, healthy eating and more. In addition, the volunteers performed dental exams in the Colgate Van, also present at the fair.
NOVA first-year MEC students Evelin Abad, Allison Bonifant, Hoang Nguyen, Lindsey Shurtliff, and second-year students Claudia Dias, Sindy Lazo and Cortney Lynn were accompanied by faculty members and Northern Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association (NVDHA) members Betsy Di Silvio, Deirdre Kane and Sharon Clarke. Kane and Clarke are also registered dental hygienists and NOVA alumni. The experience was a rewarding volunteer activity for everyone.
