On February 28, the Office of Student Life hosted David Johns as part of its Black History Month celebration. Johns most recently served as the Executive Director of White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African-Americans. This initiative is “a cross agency effort aimed at identifying evidence-based practices that improve student achievement, and developing a network that shares these best practices.” During his address, Johns spoke about the various summits the initiative sponsored and revealed the biggest insight he learned from the students he interacted with during these summits.
He noted that students want love the most from those around them and that through feeling loved, students felt they could accomplish anything. The initiative focused, not just on the needs of the African-American community, but specific communities within the greater community including young men, young women and LGBTQ youth.
