Join NOVACares and NOVA SAS on April 26 in support of Denim Day by wearing your favorite jeans. What is “Denim Day” and why should I wear jeans? In 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.
The Denim Day campaign was created in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
NOVACares and NOVA SAS encourage the College community to wear jeans to show their support of sexual assault prevention and awareness on Denim Day on April 26. For more information about Denim Day, please visit http://denimdayinfo.org/.
