The Achieving the Dream (ATD) Committee at the Manassas Campus hosted a panel discussion titled “Does Your Mindset Need a Fix?” on April 19. The event was a collaboration between the ATD Committee and the Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) of Manassas. During the event, panelists including ATD co-chairs Chris Hafen and Maryellen Ryan, Manassas student Nermeen Shawky, and LLI members Mary Foster, Ann Cain and Bob Marsh discussed the importance of approaching life with a growth mindset.
The panel discussion was based upon the work of researcher Carol Dweck and her book, “Mindset: The Psychology of Success.” Instead of approaching life using a fixed mindset (“I am not good at math”), the panelists discussed adapting one’s approach to a growth mindset (“I haven’t learned how to do this problem yet”). This book has been a focus of the College-wide Achieving the Dream Committee in the 2016-2017 academic year, and this event was the culmination of efforts by the Manassas committee to spread the positive power of a growth mindset to the Manassas Campus. The event was attended by a collection of faculty, staff and students. Plans are to continue spreading the power of growth mindset in 2017-2018.
