In April, a group of NOVA students competed in the ninth Student Mathematical Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament (SMMART) at Carroll Community College in Westminster, Maryland. NOVA Math Assistant Professor Kumnit Nong took two teams of students to the competition that, over the years, has become a popular event among college students.
NOVA students competed against 12 community colleges, and a total of 26 teams participated in the event. One of NOVA’s two teams earned third place in the competition. NOVA’s winning team included this year’s NOVA Math Competition winners Jason Yu and Diego Valencia – eighth and ninth grade students who take dual enrollment Calculus II at the Loudoun Campus.
SMMART allows community colleges to create student teams to participate in educational fun while competing against their peers in mathematics. The tournament is a learning, teaching and networking opportunity for students and educators. NOVA will have the honor of hosting SMMART in April 2018 which will be the 10th year of the event. Nong said he will need help and support in organizing the popular event for next year and looks forward to working with students and colleagues as they prepare to host.
