Earlier this year, professors Tim Eichers (LO) and Matthew Westerhoff (MA) participated in a professional development workshop at NASA Wallops Flight Facility along with 18 other faculty members from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). This three-day, residential workshop focused on the integration of STEM in the NASA workplace with the purpose of assisting faculty in educating students on the importance of teamwork, technical skills and problem-solving.
During the first part of the day, participants got an extensive tour of the Wallops Flight facility. Afterward, the participants formed teams, and each team worked alongside a NASA scientist on a set of assigned case study simulations that involved various aircraft, balloons and rockets. Toward the end of the workshop participants presented their findings of the case studies and discussed the importance of team building and collaboration. Eichers and Westerhoff would like to thank Kirsten Manning who is the STEM Education Programs Coordinator for organizing this event.
