Groundhog Day

How many more weeks of winter?

Groundhog Day

February 2, 2014

groundhogSunday was Groundhog day.

Every year on February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil (from Punsutawney, PA) emerges from his borrow, looks to the sky, and gives us his prediction on just how much more winter weather we will be having.

According to legend, if the Phil sees his shadow, then we will have six more weeks of winter.  If by chance he does not see his shadow, then spring will come early.

In Punxsutawney, the tradition follows that Phil speaks to the Groundhog Club President in Groundhogese and directs the president to read from a certain scroll.  The message this year was:

“A Super Bowl winner I will not predict,

But my weather forecast, you cannot contradict

That’s not a football lying beside me

It’s my shadow you see

So, six more weeks of winter it shall be!”

So sorry NOVA.  We still  have six more weeks of winter ahead of us…according to a groundhog named Phil that is.

The first official day of Spring is Thursday, March 20th.
