CETL tree smallThe Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning  (CETL)  Welcomes YOU
to your first full time career year at NOVA!    We are very glad you are here!

The Faculty First Year Experience meets on the last Friday.  The location of the meetings changes each time so that by the end of our year together you will have seen each campus and will understand the huge and wonderful cloth that is NOVA’s whole.   Your main emphasis for your first year is to be about teaching, although that’s surely not all we’ll do:

UID-CETL faculty and active shooter risk factorsOur First Year will be built of three interwoven pieces:

Resources_and_Tours Resources and Tours.  When we meet on your specific campus, your CETL Faculty Associate will have created a resource fair for your own campus resources.    The rest of the new faculty will join us at 11:30 and everyone will meet the provost and have lunch and tour your campus.

generic_PPPolicies and Practices.   VCCS,  NOVA, and CETL, want the main concentration of your first year to be about teaching, but we won’t forget the practices and college wide resources that you have available to you and your students.   This ‘main’ part of your day begins at 11:30 when the entire faculty convenes.

Generic_TIThe Teaching Institute.   The main emphasis of our First Year Experience is on teaching and as soon as we’ve had lunch, we’ll spend the rest of our time together working on specific aspects of Teaching at NOVA.   You’ll find this informative, helpful and really worthwhile.

April 24th

Reston Center

The address is 1831 Wiehle Avenue.  Here are all of the directions that the college gives on how to get to the Reston Center from each of the campuses.    Depending on  traffic and because I live near it, I  take the Fairfax County Parkway and go east on The Dulles Toll road (VA 267) to Exit 13 and turn left onto  Wiehle Avenue.

Be sure to RSVP!

Agenda:
11:30 AM:  Snacks and social time.
12:00 PM:  Syllabus reviews  and discussions*
1:30 PM:     Luncheon
2:15 PM:     Closing talk with Dr. David Conroy, NOVA’s Longest Serving Faculty Member and 2014 recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

DIY-Gift-Tags-5We have a special gift and certificates and so on for all of you  as we celebrate our year together.

We have some discussion about how you’ve used or plan to use the things we’ve talked about this year.    Because one of those was a syllabus,  we also have an extra special gift for those of you who bring your syllabus for feedback (I’m bringing mine!) .  We’ll divide into groups where you can get feedback from your peers, and recommendations to incorporate all of the elements of course design that you may want to include.

Just a reminder of what things we talked about this year: Image_of_overall_CTI

Remember to complete the evaluation survey!

A new feature — Some of the CETL faculty and Some of your Second Year mentors will be available starting at 10:30 AM to talk.  The purpose of this is to answer any teaching questions or any NOVA questions that you may have.   We know that things arise or have arisen, that we run out of time at the Teaching Institute and so on.  This will give you a way to meet us and each other and to socialize and network, and talk about your teaching practice at NOVA.

Please click on the Teaching Institute icon — there are a few (short) resources for you to read for January 30th and other things to print for your use during the session.   See you then!
