“College students want many things: fun, friends, success, and an opportunity to find their own way toward a fulfilling, happy life. Dr. Erin Foley teaches students how to build a STRONG LIFE. She delivers messages aimed at helping students go after their opportunities with strength, confidence and an eye toward what’s possible.

Sponsored by the Student life Office, Dr. Foley will be conducting two programs: “The Fearless Female and the Freedom to Be Happy” and “Strong Lives Lead to Happy Lives”. ”

More Schedule Updates for the Women’s Center!

April 15: Round Table Melanie Lugo is going to host our Tuesday round table on 4/15, at our usual time 2-3. She is the Outreach Worker from WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) and a member of the Breastfeeding Committee as well. She’ll talk about WIC which is a program funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is operated in Virginia through the Virginia Department of Health with the goal to improve the health of pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition. She’ll talk about the benefits of breastfeeding and answer any questions about breastfeeding and infant, child and maternal nutrition.

April 16: Girl Rising movie and call to action, 4-6pm, room 196. The Liberal Arts Department’s Rachel Martin and Samar Tehrani along with the Women’s Center and the partnership with AAUW present Girl Rising. Girl Rising is a global campaign for girls’ education. The movie highlights the power of storytelling and leveraging partnerships to share the simple truth that educating girls can transform societies. Girl Rising unites girls, women, boys and men who believe every girl has the right to go to school and the right to reach her full potential. AAUW will provide refreshments before the film.


April 22: Round Table 4/22, from 2-3, Nichole Danraj, CMT will talk on the health benefits of massage therapy and walk participants through a 30 minute self-massage technique to help promote peace, health and wellness. Perfect as we are going into the final weeks of the semester!

This month there are a lot of exciting things happening with the Women’s Center! There are a lot of conferences and events that are going on that I  encourage folks to participate in.

April 7: Human Trafficking Conference

 – There will be discussions at 9:30, 11:00, and 7:30

April 8:  Equal Pay Day 

April 15: Breast Feeding 

April 16:  Girl Rising and  Student Voices in Room 196 in the Bisdorf Building 

April 23: Student Voices Continued

Round Table – Putting STEAM into STEM – Rebecca Kamen’s work explores the nexus of art and science. She has exhibited and lectured all around the world including NIH, MIT and many other world class institutions. Hear her talk about her experiences and inspire discussion about how the boundaries of art and science are more fluid than we think and how each discipline can inform and inspire the other.

Women’s Center and Psychology Department team up to show “Crazy Like Me”, a film about five interwoven stories that focus on mental illness and its impact on those it affects, their friends and families. After the movie there will be panelists to discuss issues surrounding depression, bipolar, and PTSD.

Movie: “Girls Rising” (http://www.girlrising.com/) offered by Women’s Studies, Psychology, and cosponsored by AAUW. The film tells about nine girls from around the world and the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to positively transform the world.

Sexual Assault/ Domestic Violence / Stalking Awareness Training

Tomorrow one of our amazing police officers will be leading a training session with a member of SAVE to  help bring awareness and provide safety tips to situations surrounding Sexual Assault, domestic violence, and stalking.  A few weeks ago we had a great round table discussion about this, and this is being extended through this training and awareness program. Everyone is encouraged to attend, and become informed.

Here are some of the topics that will be discussed:

How to avoid sexual assaults, domestic, violence, and stalking

What to do if you are a victim

What to do if someone you know is a victim

Police guidance on relevant topics (i.e. emergency protective orders, police reporting, options, and more)

Resources in your community

I encourage you to come on out to the event it will be held on the Tyler Building in room 112.
