Take Turns to Listen

Mark Wong offers this listening advice:

Don’t listen so you can solve the problem. Listen so you can experience the story.

Don’t listen to people’s words, listen to the moments.

Don’t just take turns to talk. Take turns to listen.

Three to Succeed

Seems we need three assets to reduce risks of suicide ideation and risk behaviors. A Fairfax County Youth Survey analysis reveals that having just three assets dramatically reduces teens’ risk behaviors and promotes thriving youth (http://www.unifiedpreventioncoalition.org/for-parents/youth-survey-results.html)

Assets are: Possessing high personal integrity, performing community service, having teachers recognize good work, having trusted adults to talk to, participating in extracurricular activities and having parents available for help.

To learn more about the survey link to  http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/demogrph/youthpdf.htm. This survey is done for students in middle and high schools with the results providing a snapshot of Fairfax County youth and serve as a barometer of the community’s effectiveness fostering healthy choices in young people.

Veterans Day

What do you know about the U.S. Military and veterans?

Operation Got Your 6 is a delightful 6 minute video with the penguins of Madagascar and First Lady Michelle Obama. This film was written and directed by Steve Hickner in collaboration with DreamWords Animation and the White House Communications Agency. Check it out at http://youtu.be/WmRHhdVGHM

All Politics is Local

Voting in elections is one of my favorite ways to play a part in history. It’s a right that I know others have fought for me to have. (Constitutional Trivia: The 15th Amendment enables non-whites and low-income citizens the right to vote. The 19th Amendment enables women to vote. The 26th Amendment allows citizens 18 and over to vote.)

This past Tuesday, just over 50% of the eligible voters in my district (Braddock, Fairfax County, Virginia) cast a vote. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/gis/electionresults/ While this turnout is better than most districts, it saddens me that many choose to sit it out.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.                                       – Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

Until the US Constitution was amended, (17th amendment), we did not directly vote for our US Senator. This year, 864 citizens in my district offered their preference. My vote mattered. So does yours.
