2021 PaTHS Scholar

  Sama Mohamud

I would like to thank the Loser-Savkar Scholarship foundation for the amazing opportunity they have given me to continue my education. I am grateful that the science community at NOVA has chosen me to be a recipient of this honorable award. This has motivated me and encouraged me to continue to reach for the stars and overcome barriers that are inevitable.

I am extremely grateful and excited to continue on this educational journey and I hope to pursue a career in the medical field. I aspire to be a doctor that creates a safe space for those of any race, gender, and/or ethnicity. I am thankful to be a part of a community as diverse and supportive as this one. I hope one day I, too, can be a part of an organization such as this to help encourage future generations to continue their education.

2018 PaTHS Scholar

  Rayan Hamid

I’m incredibly thankful and honored to receive the Loser-Savkar Women in Science PaTHS Scholarship; I cannot express my gratitude in words to Professors Savkar and Loser. I am humbled and flattered that I was chosen out of the many applicants. This award has served as a reminder that hard work and determination will not go unrecognized. There are always people who will acknowledge your effort and encourage you to keep going. Being recognized as a STEM Woman is an absolute privilege and being awarded a STEM scholarship is “the cherry on top!” This award will serve as an encouragement for me; I will keep on working hard to achieve my goals. I will not fail the world, and most importantly, I will not fail myself.

My aim is to attend medical school and become a Pediatrician. If women were aware of how much our gender has contributed in the field of science, I believe that many of them would be more empowered to join the STEM field. It seems that women are always under estimated from Henrietta Lacks to Rosalind Franklin, our contributions and discoveries are not given their due credit. With my STEM degree I will march into the clinics and successfully treat and heal all those who come to me.  I will prove to everyone through my degree, and through my success, that I am a STEM woman. I will be able to say, “I am just as good, if not better than my male colleagues.”
