Peer Mentors


The Pathway to the Baccalaureate Peer Mentor Program is designed to support student success in transitioning to college through the utilization of trained student peer mentors within Pathway SDV 100 Student Development classes who provide new students with support, strategies for academic success, referrals to campus resources, and serve as a bridge for engaging students in college life.  Peer Mentors will share their own experiences in class, make weekly announcements on leadership and service opportunities, remain after class to answer questions or provide supportive listening, and offer to bring interested students to a campus event, club meeting or community service initiative.

Peer Mentor Eligibility Requirements:

  • Current Pathway to the Baccalaureate student
  • Successful completed SDV 100 Student Development course
  • Completed two semesters at NOVA with a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Demonstrated desire to help new students transition successfully to college life

Learning Outcomes

  • New students gain understanding of curricular learning and student development as intertwined, inseparable elements of the full college student experience
  • New students experience a commitment to their educational goals, gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and feel a connection to the college
  • Peer mentors experience increased competency in their communication, listening, public speaking, and interpersonal skills and abilities
  • Peer mentors gain increased self-awareness in terms of their innate strengths and shortcomings, often gaining clarity on their own career direction through the process
