Yanis Yousufzai I am truly blessed to be the recipient of the Reva A Savkar Excellence in Learning Scholarship. With so many deserving candidates, it is an honor for me to receive this award from the very inspirational and accomplished Professor Reva Savkar. This reward has helped me to alleviate the financial burden of tuition and is an impetus for me to continue my college education with newfound determination and rigor. NOVA has provided me with both academic and personal support, which I am grateful for and will never forget. This award will help pay for my tuition for the fall semester and will bring me closer to my dream of pursuing a career in medicine

2017 Excellence in Learning Scholars

Ryan Bhojwani Receiving this scholarship is so special for me and I cannot thank Professor Savkar enough. Professor Savkar is such a kind and understanding professor. It is clear that she wants the total well being of her students. She is very humanistic. I especially love how she wants us to become better people and help society. For some of us, our path to helping society is through Science and she helps develop that.

Right now I am dependent on my parents who are paying for my education at NVCC. This scholarship makes me feel proud that I can financially contribute to my own education. I will use my NVCC education to merge Science and Computing which are my 2 passions. I especially love Chemistry and know that my college major will incorporate more advanced classes in this discipline. So much of a student’s passions come from the teachers who inspire us and make us believe that we can accomplish our goals no matter how hard they are. I know Professor Savkar is that type of teacher and I was fortunate to have had her class before she retired.

Vo Thanh Long Tran I am very thankful and honored to be selected to receive the Reva A. Savkar Excellence in Learning Award.

I am an international student from Vietnam and I love to study about the human body, especially the human brain. I am very grateful for receiving the award since it lessens the financial pressure on me and my family, helping me concentrate on my education. Transfer to a top university to pursue an undergraduate, and then a graduate degree in Medical or Neuroscience is my educational goal. Thank you very much.

Radwa Elsayedsmall-radwa-elsayed I am so happy that I got selected for the “Reva A. Savkar Excellence in Learning Scholarship”. It helped me buy my semester supplies, and saved a lot for me. I really thank Professor Savkar for choosing to award me this scholarship. Professor Savkar You are a very nice and kind person.

Now I am continuing my Associate in Science Degree and working toward transferring to a four year university and then go to Medical School.

Deepa Kumarismall-deepa-kumari The ” Reva A. Savkar Excellence in Learning Scholarship” was the first award I have ever received. Being selected for this award was motivating, because it is a merit based scholarship.  What could I say about Professor Savkar — I always have a lack of words to describe how altruistic she is. Professor Savkar always focused on the concepts. If you love to learn, you will definitely love her because I was awe-struck by her passion for learning.

I will be graduating from NOVA, in December 2016, hopefully with 4.0 GPA. I am planning to transfer to George Mason University to do my Bachelor’s Degree in Biology with a biotechnology concentration.

Pazilaiti Paerhatismall-pazilaiti-paerhati I still remember how excited I was being selected as a winner. Before I received the scholarship, I thought it would take a long time to accomplish my dream for helping new comers who have language barriers in the medical field, and becoming a doctor to help them more. It was Prof. Savkar who gave me encouragement to chase after my dream. I really want to thank Prof. Savkar again for understanding and supporting my dream!

I am majoring in biology at UVA and on the track of premed. At UVA, I am continuing my volunteer job in Martha Jefferson Hospital Cancer Center. Also, I am working on my research project in the nuclear medicine field in the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center at UVA hospital, I am a member of the leadership team of Charlottesville Alliance for Refugees, and I am in charge of the health literature program. I am also an active member of AED premedical honor society; I mainly volunteer with premed activities.

2015 Excellence in Learning Scholars

Nhien Transmall-nhien-tran As a person with an undying passion for Chemistry since 12, receiving the “Reva A. Savkar Excellence in Learning” Scholarship made me proud. The award has shown me that my years of working and studying Chemistry was effectively paying off. It also motivated me to keep my zeal for chemistry and eventually become a great medical researcher. Even though I did not take any classes with Prof. Savkar, I had the honor to work with her during the NOVA Summer Academy 2016 when I was still a teaching assistant at NVCC Annandale. I promise to never give up on my dream and do everything to help the community.

I am currently studying in University of Maryland, College Park, and will graduate in May 2018 with a degree in Biochemistry and a minor in Physics.  I am finishing my paperwork to become a teaching assistant in Organic Chemistry. I also plan to apply for a chemistry summer research internship in 2017 in order to improve my skills in the field.

2014 Excellence in Learning Scholar

Alex Parissmall-alex-paris Because of the “Reva A. Savkar Excellence in Learning” Scholarship, I was able to complete all prerequisites for and currently matriculate at the George Washington University’s Physician Assistant Program.

Professor Savkar’s passion for education and science not only taught me the chemistry background necessary to be successful in the field of medicine but also provided the key to learning as an adult. This is a skill that has been invaluable as a graduate student. Professor Savkar is someone who always goes the extra mile for students and truly has made a positive impact on my life.
