About

In an effort to help further the advancement of the geospatial tradecraft, USGIF is dedicated to assist promising students interested in the geospatial sciences with scholarship awards.

USGIF hopes to inspire students who are interested in all that GEOINT has to offer to invest their futures in this incredibly exciting and relevant field of study.

The USGIF Academic Committee this summer selected 25 students for scholarship awards totaling $104,000. This year’s awards bring the total amount of scholarship dollars given out by USGIF to $584,000 since launching the program in 2004.

The Scholarship Program is partially funded by the annual Allder Golf Classic. Named in honor of the late William R. Allder Jr., the Allder Golf Classic raises money for the USGIF Scholarship Program.

GIS ISO Standards Training

From a GIS student:  There is a good ISO training site on the GIS Lounge offering Free GIS ISO 191 series webinars through NOAA.  Some of the plusses are: All materials offered are public domain for educational purposes (just need to register the number of attendees with NOAA for accurate counts). The webinar includes a workbook containing ISO standards for BIO_metadata, MD_Metadata and MI_metadata, a feature catalog and .uml’s (a plus, as the purchasing each student alone is pricey).  The NOAA Webinar hosts are very responsive to ALL questions…installing the webinar link (for the computer challenged).

CommonWealth STEM Industry Internship Program

PROGRAM FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS MAJORING IN A STEM FIELD WITH AT LEAST 30 CREDIT HOURS (rising sophomores):  http://csiip.spacegrant.org/  Deadline Jan 31st

With an increasing demand for skilled STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) workers in Virginia, the development of efficient pathways between undergraduate students pursuing STEM degrees and industry has become an urgent need. With support from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) in partnership with Virginia’s Regional Technology Councils, and in collaboration with Virginia companies, Virginia colleges, and community colleges, has created the Commonwealth STEM Industry Internship Program (CSIIP). CSIIP links undergraduate STEM students to paid summer internship positions with companies throughout Virginia.

This program offers a one-stop, centralized, online internship application system that provides Virginia’s undergraduate STEM majors the ability to search and apply for STEM-related paid summer internships. This same tool allows participating Virginia-based companies the ability to search a large database of student internship applications for specific skills, experience, educational background, interests and desired work locations to find the best possible candidates for their paid summer internships.

Virginia’s companies will have access to the prescreened internship applications online and can search and sort them by a variety of criteria. Companies can search the database directly or can be assisted by VSGC staff. Companies select students, make offers, and employ interns directly.
