NASA DEVELOP Summer 2017

The NASA DEVELOP Program is currently recruiting for the summer 2017 term. This is a 10-week paid contracting position open for current students, recent college graduates, and career transitioning professionals including veterans of the Armed Forces. Although the term is only 10 weeks, there are many opportunities to advance through the program to year-long contracts.

This is a great opportunity for individuals who are interested in practical applications of remote sensing and GIS, specifically in the field of Earth Science. Our projects focus on addressing local and international community concerns while utilizing NASA’s Earth observations. Participants work in teams, with guidance from NASA and partner science advisors, to demonstrate to partner organizations how NASA remote sensing imagery can be used in water resources, disaster management, ecological forecasting, and other applications to address environmental community concerns. DEVELOP’s projects are interdisciplinary in nature, so applications are welcome from all academic backgrounds.

The summer online application window is January 9 – February 17.  The summer program dates are June 5 – August 11. This program has three terms: spring, summer, and fall – the term dates and application windows are updated on the “Apply” page of the DEVELOP website. In addition to Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, there are many other locations across the United States that you can find on the “About” page.

Responsibilities will include: literature review, data processing and analysis, and composing deliverables including a technical paper, poster, presentation, and video. Previous GIS or remote sensing knowledge, while beneficial and more competitive, are not required for acceptance.

Applicants must have excellent communication and writing skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Days of the week are flexible, but applicants should be able to commit to 20-30 hours per week for the summer term. Paid positions are funded as consultants using a rate determined by application type, education level, and location.

Opportunity Title: GIS developer/analysts

Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) hosts and serves multidisciplinary, multi-dimensional, multi-scale spatiotemporal Earth science data products derived from Earth Observation System (EOS) satellites and from science models. These data are useful for a wide range of GIS research and applications in areas as climate, atmosphere, hydrology, weather, and agriculture. As we have seen an increasing number of GIS users accessing and using our data in various GIS platforms and software packages, we would like to provide this opportunity for this internship to further our efforts in making NASA earth data better used in the GIS communities, through either enhancing our GIS service capability or developing real world applications. The GIS service enhancement mainly involves enabling GES DISC data in ArcGIS services (image and feature servers) and presentation/visualization in ArcGIS portals (portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online). This internship will involve mini GIS projects or use case scenarios by utilizing GES DISC data. The following are some of the applications as an example, but the intern is highly encouraged to propose his/her own project after browsing through the science data parameters from GES DISC: 1) downscaling regional scale precipitation and soil moisture (or other parameters such as temperature) for local applications, 2) crop growth suitability analysis through using such data as solar radiation, temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, 3) natural disaster susceptibility analysis, such as landslide, hurricane, flood, and drought, 4) spatial and temporal analyses of extreme ecoclimatological events or phenomena, such as soil moisture deficiency, dust, air pollution.
The results of the internship should provide enough material for a poster presentation at an AGU conference or similar professional meetings and also for an entry in the GES DISC cookbook/recipe to help other GIS users.
The student should have taken introductory GIS courses and familiar with the ArcGIS software.  Knowledge/proficiency in ArcPy is a plus.

The AAG seeks interns on a year-round basis for the spring, summer, and fall semesters.
Interns participate in most AAG programs and projects such as education, outreach, research, website, publications, or the Annual Meeting. The AAG also arranges for interns to accompany different AAG staff on visits to related organizations or events of interest during the course of their internship. A monthly stipend of $500 is provided and interns are expected to make their own housing and related logistical arrangements. Enrollment in a Geography or closely related program is preferred but not a prerequisite for these opportunities.
