SDV 101: Orientation to Education

 SDV 101 ORIENTATION TO EDUCATION (1 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduces students to the skills that are necessary to achieve their academic goals, to the services offered at the College and to the teaching profession. Covers topics such as services offered at the College, including the learning resources center; counseling and advising; listening, test taking and study skills; and topical areas that are applicable to the teaching profession. Lecture 1 hr. per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

The purpose of Orientation to Education is to provide students with a variety of opportunities for learning about the dimensions of being successful in achieving their personal and career goals, while exploring the possibilities and potentialities of the teaching profession. While the course is specifically designed for those who are preparing to go into teaching (and is a recommended first semester requirement in the General Studies/Teacher Education Specialization Program) any student can satisfy their SDV requirement with this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:

A. Identify and describe academic tools for success
B. Describe and apply technology tools for academic success
C. Identify and use tools for career and educational exploration and planning
D. Describe and implement skills for successful self-management
E. Describe and explain policies and procedures of the College
F. Describe and explain teacher licensure requirements and demonstrate an awareness of current trends
G. Identify components and begin development of a portfolio

A. Study skills, habits, learning styles and attitudes
B. Use of college e-mail and web resources
C. Career information focused on teaching including classroom observation, informational interviewing and transfer opportunities in teacher preparation
D. Personal goal setting, decision-making, and effective self-responsibility strategies
E. College policies and procedures
F. Teacher licensure requirements and current trends in the teaching profession
