Passage: Monotypes by Clare Winslow

January 10, 2018

The Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center is excited to announce the start of the 2018 exhibition season. Clare Winslow will be present a series of subtlety colored monotypes in a solo exhibition in the Passage gallery on the second level of the arts center. The exhibition runs from January 20, 2018  through March 5th, 2018. There will be an exhibition reception on February 10, 2018 2-4PM.

A native of Washington, D.C. and third-generation artist, Clare’s training includes a degree in painting, a master’s degree in Teaching, and years of post-graduate study at the Corcoran College of Art. Her focus on printmaking has allowed her to integrate a broad range of artistic interests: drawing, photography, digital imaging and painting. Clare’s work has been included in group and solo shows in the US and overseas. She is a former Denbo fellow at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center and received an Artist and Scholars Grant from the Humanities Council of Montgomery County, Maryland in 2016. Clare’s work is united by the themes of connectivity, the decline of nature, and the passage of time. She teaches Printmaking at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, Maryland.

This exhibit of handpulled prints offers abstracted views of nature, light, and seasonal change. These monotypes, or one-of-a-kind prints, were created with a printing press, paper, and waterbased inks.

Sometimes I take an experimental approach by combining monotyping with techniques such as screenprinting, mixed media, drawing, embroidery or drypoint. “Happy accidents” are embraced, as they nudge me to welcome change and stay fully present during the act of creation.

I am especially interested in the hushed sense of waiting that accompanies a cusp, such as the advent of spring, the transition to autumn, or the moment between dusk and darkness. Some of the titles are influenced by poetry, such as in “Passing Between” (Basho) or “Hope is an Echo” (Sandburg).

The Passage Gallery is located on the second level of the Schlesinger Center outside of the Margaret W. & Joseph L. Fisher Art Gallery. The artists’ reception is free and open to the public. The galleries at the Schlesinger Center are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and during concert hall performances and public events. The Schlesinger Center is located at 4915 East Campus Drive, Alexandria, VA, 22311. For additional information about art shows and concert hall events, call the Schlesinger Center at 703.845.6156.
