The Human Library

The Human Library aims to establish a safe conversational space in which a “library” of people share their experiences with stigma, prejudice, and/or discrimination in an effort to challenge societal prejudices.

Perseverance, finding your passion and making global connections are prevalent themes you will encounter during this unique experience.

“Readers” can check out a book for up to 30 minutes at a time.

App of the Week: Symbaloo

1Symbaloo – a visual bookmarking tool that lets users add all their favorite links and websites in a format that is easy to use, by displaying them as icons or logos.

Symbaloo stores the user’s bookmarks “in the cloud” so that the user can access the favorite sites from any device in any place with an internet connection.

The user needs to enter a name, an email address, and a password to register and then click on a verification email to use all site features and change their preferences.

Symbaloo uses colorful tiles that the user can easily arrange and organize to create a visually appealing “webmix” (or layout).

The user can drag and drop items to organize them in a way that is convenient and practical.

The favorite items can be searched so users can find those that are most relevant to the items they are adding.

The user can connect Facebook and Twitter to a Symbaloo account to facilitate sharing pages or individual links.

Google Extension of the Week: Clearly- by Evernote

For the next few Apps of the Week (when it is my turn to post), I will focus on Google Apps and Extensions for Education, GAFE for short.  I know, one question that comes to mind, for me anyway, is what is the difference between a Google app and a Google extension?  One presenter made it abundantly clear to me last weekend at the Northern Virginia GAFE Summit.  A Google app serves as a map to an actual website that can be used as a tool. A Google extension enhances the functionality of the Chrome browser.

The Google Extension I would like to share with you is Clearly.  Created by Evernote, this app removes web distractions from your websites to keep content free and clear from ads and pop-ups.

Once you download the extension on your Chrome browser, a small icon will appear next to your address box, also know as an omni box.  The icon we are looking for is the mini table lamp. See the image below:

All ads and distractions are removed.  In addition to a distraction-free site, one can change the font for reading ease. One can even highlight text.  Saving a “clear” website in Evernote for future reference also and seamless reading is a matter of logging into your Evernote Account and selecting the Evernote elephant icon.

Clearly is a free extension that will prove beneficial to you if you don’t like to navigate through noise and clutter on your websites.

App of the Week: eduClipper

EduClipper
Clip anything. Share everything!

by Patricia Cooper

eduClipper

Educlipper is a tool that allows teachers and students to collect, organize and share content all in one location. It’s been referred to the “Pinterest of Education” because you can create digital bulletin boards of useful links, articles, and images. You can even upload and share original documents and files. You can follow other eduClips and people can follow you. The eduClipper app is designed for the iPhone and iPad but it’s also web-based. However, the app version has some neat features like allowing you to annotate your clips.
This awesome organizational tool will help you cut down cut down on the amount of time your spend searching for great content. All you have to do is type in the subject and see what other educators and students have shared. Another great feature of this tool is the ability to clip parts of an article or webpage. You don’t have to save the entire page. For example, if you just want a particular info graphic that is part of an article, you could just use the scissor tool and clip the image and save it to your board. It’s as simple as that.
You can cross-post your educlips to Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest
It’s real easy to use and best of all it’s free.
Be careful. Just like their tag line says. You can spend hours upon hours clipping anything and sharing everything!

App of the Week: Periscope

Imagine seeing the world from a different perspective?  Imagine being able to connect with people from around the world, seeing and hearing new things, all from a mobile device.

Periscope is the app that can connect users from all over the world, instantly.  Periscope is FREE and is available on both the iTunes App Store and the Google Play store.

Periscope was designed by Twitter, so it’s easy to use for anyone who already has a Twitter account.  It allows users to follow the same people they follow on Twitter, and will send you a push notification when one of your connections goes ‘live’ on Periscope.  Once a ‘broadcast’ has ended, it be replayed for up to 24 hours after the event was live.  Periscope allows users to host private broadcasts as well (attendees must be followers and invited to join), and any link to a ‘live’ broadcast is easily tweeted out with click of a button.  From a mobile device, you can touch your screen when in a broadcast to let the host know how much you like it.  Broadcasts can be ranked based on the amount of hearts it receives, known as the “most loved” list.

Share an experience, whether it is educational, personal, or professional, with the Periscope app.  Others can join in to listen and watch, and share in the experience.

Users may also connect through their computer, but will be unable to connect with the conversation or hearts features of the mobile Periscope app.

Show the world YOUR perspective and watch from others, and start using the Periscope app now!
