Advising Center FAQs

Q: Where is the Advising Center?

A: CA 111

Q: How often do I need to advise in CA 111?

A: On average each faculty member should expect to spend one hour every other week or two hours every 4 weeks in the advising center. There are approximately 82 faculty advisors in each division (82 in LASS & 82 in MSTB). This staffing estimate should cover the 12 week period for which faculty are expected to advise in CA 111.

Q: Can I use my office hours as advising time in CA 111?

A: Yes. Please know that you should be performing advising activities during the time in CA, not grading papers or other course-specific work.  You should help walk-ins or appointments or reach out to other assigned advisees.

Q: Can I use my appointment hours as advising time in CA 111?

A: Yes. You can also encourage your own advisees to come see you there; however, you shouldn’t make appointments during that time.

Q: Can I use my advising time in CA 111 to see my own advisees?

A: Absolutely! Just make sure they know where to find you when you are working in the advising center.

Q: Why can’t I spend this “advising time” in my own office? Why do I have to be in CA 111?

A: The new advising model is trying to achieve a “one stop shop” feel for students. When a student stops in on the first floor of CA, they can see anyone from student services staff, to counselors, to faculty…all to get their needs met in one place.

Q: What is so special about CA 111? What is in CA 111?

A: CA 111 is an office immediately to the right of the counseling center on the first floor of the CA building. This location helps support the “one stop shop” concept of the new advising model. There are four cubicles each with computers in that office. LASS faculty get 2 cubicles. MSTB faculty get 2 cubicles.

Q: What am I expected to do during my advising time?

A: LASS faculty will advise LASS students. MSTB faculty will advise MSTB students. You may also be called upon to support miscellaneous advising tasks.

Q: What designates peak time vs. non-peak time?

A: Data gathered over the last year indicated the busy advising weeks as experienced by the advising staff in the CA building. We are supporting the busiest times with 4 total faculty each hour (2 MSTB and 2 LASS). We are supporting the less busy times with 2 total faculty each hour (1 MSTB and 1 LASS).

Q: Do I have to document my advising appointments with students in Navigate?
