NOVA SACNAS Chapter Visits Anaheim

January 14, 2020 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

Before the holiday break, a group of students representing the NOVA Chapter of Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) attended the Annual Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in Anaheim, Calif.

Three students from the Woodbridge Campus, along with professors Sara Mendoza and Idalia Rodriguez, went to breakout sessions and poster presentations on topics in neuroscience, immunology, molecular biology, and improving student training. Students also had the opportunity to network with participating college and university representatives (over 350 institutions) that were exhibiting at the conference. They received information on different graduate programs, opportunities for summer internships, and gathered materials to share with their peers back at NOVA.

SACNAS members enjoyed the plenary lunch session on programs using rap music to teach elementary school children about the dangers of strokes. The children shared their knowledge with the adults in their life. It is an effective way of disseminating health information in the communities where the programs have been instituted. SACNAS is interested in the possibility of organizing such a program in our local elementary school system.
