#RealNOVA – Student Needs Symposium
In case you missed it…
NOVA hosted its inaugural #RealNOVA Student Needs Symposium on November 28th, 2019! Approximately 200 attendees gave their time and resources during the conference to learn about address barrier for students. Attendees collaborated and strategized sustainable solutions to address significant barriers at NOVA.
This is the beginning of the conversation that is so important not just for NOVA but for all of Virginia. In 2019, The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice’s research this year stated that about 70% of two-year college students face housing or food insecurity. Other challenges may include; accessibility to resources, child care, transportation, and mental health. Presenters from across the college and community had the opportunity to share their resources and best practices to elevate and resolve these barriers to student success. Also, NOVA students attended and shared real-life experiences about what they face in attainment of higher education success.
Special guests included Virginia’s Secretary of Education, Mr. Atif Qarni, Radha Muthiah, President and CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank, and Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab, Founding Director of the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice in Philadelphia.
