NOVA’s Office of International Education Welcomes 89 New Students
The Office of International Education and Sponsored Programs hosted its New International Student Symposium on Jan. 8, welcoming 89 new international students for Spring semester. Despite a late opening due to snow, students had the opportunity to meet other new incoming students from around the world and from their own countries.
Students met Office of International Education administrators as well as their advisors who serve a critical role as they assist them throughout their time at NOVA to help ensure they are on track to meet their educational goals, to ensure they are abiding by the requirements of their visas and to provide a listening ear when needed. New to the American culture, students also learned how to stay safe on campus with a presentation by NOVA Police Lieutenant John Weinstein and how to abide by NOVA’s academic code of conduct with Steven Mosley of the Office of Student Integrity and Conduct.
An F-1 Visa is issued to international students who are attending an academic program or English Language Program at a college or university in the United States. F-1 students must maintain full-time student status. NOVA is home to approximately 1,200 F-1 students representing about 125 countries. Some students participate in the intensive English language program through the American Culture and Language Institute (ACLI) but most are focused on working toward a degree to take home or transfer on to a four-year institution.
