Effectively Facilitating Online Discussions

Online discussion is a common learning activity through which students can interact with content, faculty, and peer learners in an online learning environment. Faculty and students can also collaborate in the learning process as they explore learning from different perspectives. Through this seven-day asynchronous workshop offered via Canvas, you’ll learn strategies, techniques, and tools to engage students in online discussions as well as strategies and tips to help you save time in discussion facilitation. After about 5 -7 hours of self-paced online learning, you will be able to:

– identify strategies, techniques, and tools to improve online discussion and faculty presence
– develop a practical plan for effective facilitation to engage students in online learning

Instructor:  Hong Wang is an advocate and lifelong learner for innovative pedagogy and technology integration in teaching to create intentional and engaged learning experiences for all learners, with a focus on e-learning and blended learning. She has 20 years of professional work experience in higher education with multiple roles including a teaching faculty, an instructional design consultant, an instructional technologist, and a team/project manager. Hong has earned a doctorate in educational technology, and serves as Associate Director of Instructional Technology Training at NOVA Online in Northern Virginia Community College. She facilitates and manages the college-wide hybrid training program for faculty.
