Margarita M. Martinez named President Elect for Association

February 20, 2020 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

Magarita M. Martinez elected President Elect  for the Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), one of the largest subdivisions of the American Counseling Association (ACA).  ACA is the largest professional organization for counselors in the US. AMCD is the subdivision that works with Multicultural Competencies and is a home for counselors of various ethnic backgrounds and concerns.

Magarita’s election to the post is a bright spot in the history of the organization as the last time a Masters Level professional who worked in a community college won the position was in 2000 with Victor Bibbins.  Beverly O’Bryant also held this position in 2006 as a Masters level professional but the majority of presidents are Professors or Counselor in Education with PhDs.

Margarita will attend the American College Counseling Association conference and be awarded the Meritorious Award for Diversity and Inclusion.  She currently works on our Annandale Campus as an Academic Success Counselor/SDV Cluster Chair and is currently serving out her term as Vice President of Latinx Concerns (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2020) and as Secretary of the Virginia Counseling Association (July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2021).  Kudos Magarita!
