NOVA/Mason ADVANCE Declaration Process Update
On January 13, 2020, ADVANCE temporarily suspended the 2020-2021 ADVANCE Declaration form while ADVANCE staff determined the best approach to reopen the form considering (1) the recent VCCS change that students will not receive a VCCS email address if they are not registered in at least one NOVA credit (the form currently requires students to have a VCCS email and EMPLID) and (2) that the 2020-2021 NOVA catalog and ADVANCE pathways will not be available until April 2020.
As a reminder, the onboarding process for ADVANCE students is as follows:
1) Students submit an ADVANCE Declaration form
2) ADVANCE reviews students’ records to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria
3) Students receive an eligibility notification with an online pre-orientation video
4) Once students review the video, they sign and submit an ADVANCE agreement outlining their curricular pathway.
The ADVANCE Declaration form will be reopened on approximately February 24, 2020. Please note that the ADVANCE Declaration form will reflect the 2019-2020 pathways until the 2020-2021 pathways are posted (in April 2020). If you are working with a student who does not see a pathway for the major they wish to pursue, it is recommended that you advise your student to check the ADVANCE website when the 2020-2021 pathways are available and to wait to submit a Declaration form until that time.
The Fall 2020 ADVANCE Priority Declaration Deadline is July 15, 2020. Students who submit a Declaration form prior to May 1st will receive their ADVANCE eligibility notification and ADVANCE agreement after May 1, 2020. After then, eligibility notifications/ADVANCE agreements will be provided to students on a rolling basis until the deadline. If students have specific questions about the onboarding process or the ADVANCE Declaration form, please direct them to Adriana Latham advance@nvcc.edu.
If NOVA faculty or staff have any questions about this information, please email academics@nvcc.edu.
