PTK Blood Drive a Success

May 1, 2020 / Our Nighthawks

Each year, nearly 21 million blood components are transfused in American hospitals. This means that every day about 36,000 units of red blood cells, almost 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed and used to treat cancer patients, car-accident victims, premature babies, burn victims and other patients. Sadly, only three percent of the American population actually donate blood.

To help increase blood donors and donations, NOVA’s PTK chapter, Alpha Delta Tau, coordinated a blood drive with the American Red Cross on Feb. 20 on the Woodbridge Campus. The American Red Cross supplies 40 percent of the blood used in the United States.

Thanks to the generosity of blood donors who waited patiently for a donor-bed to become available (yes, it was very busy!), 26 life-saving units were collected. We were touched by the large turnout; it was a great humanitarian gesture. Many thanks to everyone who participated.

Alpha Delta Tau would like to thank its members who sacrificed their time (and in some cases their own blood) for this blood drive, whether it was helping with promotion, event coordination or raising awareness:

  • Ashley Sherell Ellison
  • Daniel Partridge
  • Diana Tagbor
  • Emily Graciela
  • Isobel Anna Nardone
  • Katherine Castro Milla
  • Kayla White
  • Khadijah Humu
  • Lorelee Vetter
  • Lucie Goodwyn
  • Philip Amenyo-Awude

Blood donations are needed throughout the year, but during times such as flu season or a pandemic, blood donations are extremely important so that hospitals are prepared. Please consider donating blood to make a difference in someone’s life. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets, use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit www.redcrossblood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
