Behind-the-Scenes Scoop on OEMS
Every morning, the Office of Emergency Management and Safety team (OEMS) settles down with their laptops and sign onto a morning Zoom meeting with Police, College IT and the College Public Information Officer. The meeting officially begins at 8 a.m., but those who log in a few minutes early enjoy a few laughs and banter while waiting for others to join. Promptly at 8 a.m., Tom Mayhew, Director of OEMS, cuts through the chatter and announces, “Alright, everyone, its 8 a.m. Time to get started!”
Mayhew presents a daily report, one that he compiles in the early morning before this meeting has begun. The report keeps the group updated on the latest news, trends and predictions about the COVID-19 pandemic. The information is gathered through a variety of sources, such as the Virginia Department of Health, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Governor’s Office, etc. Mayhew also presents on announcements and direction provided by NOVA college leaders, such as Dr. Kress. At the end of his presentation, he calls each person by name to give them an opportunity to bring any ideas, problems or solutions to the group.
The meeting comes to a close with Mayhew announcing one last opportunity for others to present before dismissing the meeting. He always remains in the Zoom meeting until all others have left, ensuring that every one was heard. Once all others have signed off, Mayhew clicks the “End Meeting.” and goes about his day.
