Dr. Cathy Cogdill Receives Enrollment Mgt. Special Assignment
Congratulations to Dr. Cathy Cogdill who will help lead NOVA’s recruitment and enrollment efforts.
Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services, and in collaboration with campuses and other college units, Dr. Cogdill will provide leadership to the campuses in creating and implementing recruitment strategies that achieve the goals for inquiries, applicant conversion and enrolled students. She will continue working as associate dean under Dr. Diane Mucci, MSTB Dean at the Manassas Campus.
Dr. Cogdill has had an extensive career at NOVA, having taught her first class as an adjunct professor in spring 2004. She was hired full-time at the Woodbridge Campus fall 2004 and later went on to serve as the business administration & management assistant dean at Manassas from 2013-2018. She became associate dean in July 2018, overseeing accounting, administration of justice, business, finance, marketing, automotive, welding, diesel, health and physical education.
After eight years at the Woodbridge Campus creating and managing the mentoring program for adjunct faculty, operating as a liaison for Student Learning Outcomes and working as a resource on course development for full-time colleagues, she joined the Manassas Campus. At that time, business students were still unclear on the differences in business degree programs and she worked with the Office of Student Success to develop and teach the college success course, SDV 101: Orientation to Business, giving students the tools for transition planning. Working with her colleagues, she created an academic schedule that kept pace with the current student load seeking a path to graduation while recruiting more students to the business programs. She now actively pursues colleagues across disciplines with training sessions to support advising the growing number of business students in meeting the overwhelming demand for faculty advisors who clearly understand institutional transfer requirements and workforce development needs. She is a stalwart supporter of the adjunct workforce with continuous membership on the Adjunct Professional Development Committee.
During her time at NOVA, Cathy served as the BUS Cluster Chair and was involved in successfully producing the first BUS 270 class, Interpersonal Communication in a Dynamic Business Organization. She also has won multiple awards for teaching excellence and grant development while maintaining course improvement and transfer advising for students. She has written supplements and presented at publisher conferences and has presented to student groups encouraging stronger resumes, better communication and business writing.
In 2018, she finished her Ph.D. in education policy with her dissertation, “Funding Virginia Community Colleges During a Recessionary Period: Implications of Utilizing an Outcomes-Based Funding Model,” investigating how performance funding applies to community colleges and the impact on mission-critical programs.
