The CARES Act Student Emergency Grant application is now open for students enrolled in the summer 2020 term. Awards are $750 for students enrolled in 12 or more program-eligible credits and $500 for students enrolled in 6-11 program-eligible credits. Additional requirements are as follows:
- Tuition and fees must be fully paid or covered by financial aid, veteran benefits or third-party contracts.
- Students must meet Title IV eligibility criteria, even if they have not filed a FAFSA.
- Students who received CARES Act or COVID-19 Student Emergency Grants for the spring 2020 term may reapply for summer if additional expenses for housing, food, technology for remote learning, childcare or healthcare exist.
- Students enrolled totally online on March 13, 2020 are not eligible.
NOVA recognizes that many of our students are experiencing expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 national crisis. NOVA received $10,014,351 in Emergency Financial Aid from the Department of Education under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act and has made these funds available to support our students whose lives have been disrupted due to COVID-19, particularly those with the greatest need. As of June 9, NOVA has distributed $3,440,500 in CARES Act grants to 5,409 students for the spring 2020 semester.
Students who have experienced financial emergency expenses, such as housing, food, technology, childcare or health costs due to the COVID-19 pandemic and NOVA campus closures are encouraged to apply for this emergency aid. The application and FAQ’s are available at https://www.nvcc.edu/studentemergencyaid.
Students are also encouraged to complete the FAFSA, which is the first step toward potentially receiving federal, state and/or institutional financial aid. The 2019-2020 FAFSA is the financial aid application to be used for summer. The 2020-2021 FAFSA should be completed for fall. Additional resources are available through the following:
