NOVA SySTEMic’s Virtual Summer Camps Extend to Newport News
NOVA SySTEMic, in partnership with Brooks Crossing Innovation and Opportunity Center (BCIOC), has extended the reach of NOVA’s STEM summer camp to Newport News, Va. as virtual learning moved the camps online. Josh Labrie and the SySTEMic team started planning the curriculum to go online as early as March saying, “When we reenvisioned our summer camps, we would have to virtualize the equipment.”
The ‘reenvisioned’ courses are now more affordable at one-third the original cost to offset the change from the original hands-on concept, which would require materials and lab hours. The offering now allows families in the NOVA service region and beyond to participate in these programs. Families can register by household.
The announcement of virtual camps caught the attention of Dr. Mia D. Joe of Old Dominion University who runs BCIOC. NOVA was important in helping BCIOC move to remote learning by adapting NOVA SySTEMic’s summer program modules. BCIOC now has 66 students registered in that region using NOVA’s programming.
