Placement Advising Notes for Fall 2020
Because NOVA testing centers are unable to conduct routine placement testing at this time, NOVA offers a variety of alternative assessment options to help students determine their readiness for college-level courses. Students should be strongly encouraged to use one of the methods on the COVID-19 placement website to assess student readiness and to seek advisement before enrolling in classes (English, ESL, Mathematics and World Languages).
Students are able to enroll themselves in entry-level classes; however, students are encouraged to speak with an advisor or counselor before enrolling.
In order for NOVA to provide proper advisement, students are strongly encouraged to provide placement information to make appropriate recommendations. This is especially important for recent high school graduates who can still be assessed for placement through multiple measures (e.g., unofficial or official high school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, etc.).
Other tools include the VPT practice placement test, which can be used as a tool to help students understand their readiness and to advise students on course selection. The ESL Placement Assessment is also available for students whose primary language is not English.
