Reminder: NOVA Closed Friday, June 19 in Honor of Juneteenth

June 18, 2020 / General NOVA News

Virginia Governor Northam has declared Friday, June 19, as a state holiday to recognize Juneteenth, which marked the official end to slavery in the United States when, in 1865, the last of the former confederate states declared an end to slavery. In recognition of this important commemoration, NOVA will be closed on Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. There will be no classes on that day, and all NOVA offices will be closed.

Sadly, the tragic events of the past few weeks have shown that we still have far to go to achieve an end to racial injustice. As Governor Northam notes in his declaration, “Awareness and education are critical to our path forward.” I encourage you to take this Friday to reflect on how we as a college community can create positive change through our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and equality.
