June 25, 2020 / General NOVA News

Dr. Anne Kress will be featured as a panelist on Opportunity America’s virtual launch of its new report, The Indispensable Institution: Reimagining Community College. The event will premiere today, Thursday, June 25, from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Register Here.

The report, crafted by a group of higher ed. thought leaders, outlines a strategy for “upskilling” Americans in the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Among the Speakers will be:

  • Anthony P. Carnevale, director, Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce
  • Anne Kress, president, Northern Virginia Community College
  • Robert Schwartz, senior research fellow, Harvard Graduate School of Education
  • Monty Sullivan, president, Louisiana Community and Technical College System
  • Joshua Wyner, vice president, Aspen Institute

As the nation rebuilds in the wake of the pandemic, millions of Americans will need fast, job-focused upskilling and reskilling to find productive work. No institution is better positioned to take on the challenges of new demands—for safety, technical and IT training and more – than the nation’s 1,100 two-year community and technical colleges.

Many community colleges already put a premium on career-focused education and training. They are nimble and have a long track record of being able to innovate to quickly meet the needs of learners and employers. Perhaps most importantly, only community colleges have the infrastructure to provide upskilling on the scale that will be needed to fuel economic recovery nationwide.
