NOVA’s Parent Zooms Answer Questions for Fall

July 30, 2020 / General NOVA News

As we prepare for the start of fall classes on August 24, NOVA is hosting a series of Parent Webinar sessions to answer questions of prospective students and their parents. On Tuesday, July 28, Alexandria Provost, Dr. Annette Haggray, and Annandale Provost, Dr. Pam Hilbert, hosted a question and answer session with over 400 parents and prospective students attending. In addition, Dr. Julie Leidig, provost of the Loudoun Campus, hosted a session for prospective parents and students from Loudoun, as well as for current high school students and parents interested in Dual Enrollment.

In each session, NOVA’s senior leadership is providing a wealth of information that students need to know to make an educated choice. In Tuesday’s session, Drs. Hilbert and Haggray presented the six course format options for students this fall:

1. Learn@Home: Live-Streamed Via Zoom
2. Learn@Home: Online, On Your Own Time
3. Learn@Home: Live-Streamed and Online
4. Learn on Campus: In Person (Limited Offerings)
5. Learn on Campus: In Person and Online (Limited Offerings)
6. Learn on Campus: In Person and Live-Streamed (Limited Offerings)

Following a general college presentation, staff members from the various departments presented on how to apply for financial aid, four-year transfer options, dual enrollment opportunities for high school juniors and seniors who wish to earn high school and college credit simultaneously and discussions of the many sports (when they resume), clubs and activities available through Student Life.

Finally, parents were able to type their questions into Chat and hear immediate answers from staff members on the many areas so critical for students as they are making their decisions about college. Parents dove in and asked dozens of questions about orientation, advising, enrollment deadlines, signing up for classes, dual enrollment, financial aid and more. Those with additional questions came away with a treasure trove of contact information so these staff members can assist them further.

Parents also took the time to express their appreciation for the role NOVA has played for their families.

“This is not a question but a comment on the wonderful opportunity that NOVA has given my child. Going there really has allowed them to realize what area really interested them. This makes it an easy transition to another college and is saving us a lot of money,” said one mom.

Another parent commented, “NOVA sounds phenomenal! Seriously! I cannot help but wonder why there is such a stigma associated with attending a community college. You mentioned so many benefits!”

These sessions are another way that NOVA is stepping up to try to anticipate and meet the needs of our community, our students and their families during a trying time.
