#NOVASTRONG Wellness Challenge Nighthawks United!
The Recreation, Wellness and Fun Committee is excited to announce a new fall 2020 initiative for all faculty and staff. The #NOVASTRONG All Year Long initiative is designed to promote a healthy platform for members of the NOVA community to stay connected, uplifted and inspired throughout the semester.
The challenge will consist of three phases: Fitness, Healthy Eating and Self-Care. Participants are expected to commit at least two weeks each month (Sept, Oct. and Nov.) to activities that focus on these three phases. During the challenge, team captains will be assigned to encourage, support and to help participants track their progress. The team with the most points at the end of each phase will be declared the winner for that phase. The phases have been outlined below:
Phase 1 (Fitness): Sept. 14 – Sept. 25
This phase will focus on enhancing your overall fitness. It will consist of participants completing as much fitness/exercise as they can in a two-week period. Team members will keep track of the number of repetitions for each exercise, the amount of steps taken in a day and the number of miles run/walked. Water consumption and stretching is highly recommended and considered to be essential each week. Each Friday, participants will submit their results to help their team earn points. LET’S GET ACTIVE!!!
Phase 2 (Healthy Eating): Oct. 12 – Oct. 23
Proper eating is an essential part of overall wellness, and many studies have shown that merely tracking food improves one’s eating quality. Participants will be required to document their nutritional intake and submit that. MyFitnessPal is an app that can be utilized to help keep track of food consumption. This is also a great way to share healthy recipes, join online cooking classes and try new foods. Each Friday, participants will submit their results to help earn team points.
Phase 3 (Self Care): Nov. 9 – Nov. 20
Proper self-care is important to living a “well-balanced” life. This phase will focus on enhancing overall emotional, physical, psychological, financial and spiritual health through activities and practices engaged in on a daily basis. These activities should refuel versus deplete our energy. Identifying stressors and finding ways to reduce anxiety are key to establishing good relationships with oneself and others. Each Friday, participants will submit results to help their team earn points.
