CAORC Conference on Cultivating Internationalization at Community Colleges, Sept. 25

CAORC (the Council for American Overseas Research Centers) and College of DuPage will host an important virtual conference, The World Anew: Creating New Spaces for Internationalization at Community Colleges, on Friday, Sept. 25, from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. This webinar brings together leading voices in community college international education to discuss how today’s unprecedented challenges require educators to re-imagine the relevance, priorities and methods of their internationalization efforts. Special attention will be given to the critical importance of enhancing global and intercultural competency through international curriculum development and the essential role of technology and virtual exchange in broadening access to global experiences and perspectives. The webinar will conclude with a brief CAORC presentation highlighting upcoming overseas faculty development seminar opportunities.

Panelists include:

Geoff Bradshaw, Ph.D., is dean of international education and senior international officer at Madison Area Technical College (Madison College, Wis.). He has worked at Madison College since 1997 and has grown international programs from a one-person, part-time role to a center with a vibrant staff of seven that is nationally recognized for their contributions to community college internationalization. He is also founder and director of the Community College Sustainable Development Network.

Katherine Schuster, Ph.D., distinguished professor of education, has worked at Oakton Community College (Ill.) since 2003 and has served as Global Studies Coordinator since 2005. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Education, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Loyola University of Chicago. She is also president of the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs and is on the Senior International Officer Board of Community Colleges for International Development.

Mukila Maitha is associate professor of geography, Geography Department chair and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) coordinator at Harper College (Ill.). He is passionate about teaching environmental topics using geospatial technologies and expanding global perspectives through education. He has also led several overseas study programs. Mukila was born in Nairobi, Kenya and studied at Northern Illinois University, where he obtained BS and MS degrees in Geography. Mukila was also a participant in the 2020 CAORC Faculty Development Seminar to India.
