NOVA’s Ashley Wilkins to Collaborate with GMU’s Ed. Department on Tutoring Initiative

October 8, 2020 / Faculty/Staff Highlights

Prof. Ashley Wilkins, Teacher Education Program head, MA, and Dr. Roberto Pamas, director of TEACHERtrack at George Mason University, are collaborating to support a tutoring initiative with local school districts. In an effort to strengthen community ties while providing students career-oriented experiences, NOVA and Mason students are committing three hours each week to tutoring high-needs elementary school students in reading. This opportunity empowers students to connect with the community in which they live, along with receiving focused mentorship through a nonprofit partner (EduTutorVA) on effective instructional strategies for the teaching of reading to struggling students. The hope is that this partnership can grow over time, and also encourage partnerships in other areas of need moving forward.

Any student interested in this service opportunity should contact Professor Wilkins, amwilkins@nvcc.edu.
