Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Virtual Learning Option

November 30, 2020 / General NOVA News

The Office of Wellness and Mental Health is pleased to announce two MHFA trainings for NOVA staff and faculty for spring 2021. Mental Health First Aid is a certification course that teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. The training gives participants the skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Participants will complete a two-hour, self-paced online class, and then, about a week later, they will participate in two three-hour Instructor-led video conferences.

What it Covers:
• Common signs and symptoms of mental illness
• Common signs and symptoms of substance use
• How to interact with a person in crisis
• How to connect the person with help
• NEW: Expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care

The first virtual training course will be offered February 19 and 26 (Fridays), from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The second virtual training course will be offered April 1 and 8 (Thursdays), from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Each course is limited to 20 participants. If you are interested in attending, please use this Form to register. We look forward to offering more of these trainings in fall 2021 as well. For further information, contact Connie Kirkland at cokirkland@nvcc.edu or Teresa Bell at tmbell@nvcc.edu.
