Fall Annandale Lyceum Series Concludes
The final Annandale Campus Lyceum Committee event for the 2020 Fall Semester was held on Thursday, November 19 as Maddy McCoy, president of the Slavery Inventory Database, presented “Alexandria’s Community Remembrance Project: Acknowledging A City’s Lynching History.”
Audrey Davis, director of the Alexandria Black History Museum, was originally scheduled to give the speech, but a family emergency prevented her from making the presentation, and she asked Ms. McCoy, a member of the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project Steering Committee, to speak for her. Her speech was recorded and can be accessed Here.
Preceding this presentation, Ron Kipling Williams, adjunct professor at the University of Baltimore Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences and faculty fellow at the Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics, presented a speech on “Leadership and Race.”
The Lyceum virtual Lunch and Learn Justice and Equity Series for the fall semester included four presentations via Zoom held at 12:30 p.m. across several Thursdays and was open to faculty, staff, students and anyone else interested in any of them.
The series began with the 2020 Constitution Day Speech on Sept. 17 with, “The Man of the People: Political Dissent and the Making of the American Presidency,” with Dr. Nathaniel Green, NOVA associate professor of history. His speech was recorded and can be accessed Here.
The second presentation of the series took place on Oct. 1. “Gerrymandering and Equity: ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ on Virginia’s Redistricting Amendment,” was presented by Brian Cannon, from Fair Maps VA, who made the case for voting “Yes” on 2020 Virginia Constitutional Amendment #1,” and Trevor Southerland, from Fair Districts VA, presented the case for the “No” vote on the amendment. The redistricting amendment was approved by the voters in the general election on November 5 and the presentation recording can be viewed Here.
The Annandale Campus Lyceum Committee is finalizing its 2021 Spring Semester line-up, which will also be offered via Zoom and will be announced in the Daily Flyer when we return from the Winter Break.
