NOVA’s On-Campus Food Pantries Pivot to Help Local Communities

December 9, 2020 / General NOVA News

With safety concerns limiting access to NOVA’s campuses, the on-campus food pantries have closed. The food that could be, was strategically placed to help students who do come to campus. But many items have expiration dates. No one wanted to have items expiring in the campus food pantries! Each campus jumped into action and made arrangements to donate the food items to local community organizations. In many cases, these were area food pantries to which our students are referred. Some campuses also took their donations to local shelters and community centers.

It is so great to know that our NOVA food pantries are still working to provide food to our students and the community! Many thanks to the staff on campuses that made this happen.

Students who express a need have been referred to local community food pantries, ALIVE’s “Truck-to-Trunk” food distribution events and have even learned about applying for the government nutrition funding program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
