Dr. Nathan Carter to Serve as NOVA’s First CDEIO!
I am happy to share that Dr. Nathan Carter will serve as NOVA’s first Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer. He will begin this new role on January 10, 2021.
Dr. Carter is currently an interim associate dean for LASS on the Alexandria Campus and an associate professor of communication studies and theatre. He has served our college in a number of capacities since joining NOVA, including holding an appointment as senior academic affairs fellow and serving as a member of the NOVA/GMU ADVANCE Tech Executive Leadership Team. Dr. Carter also originated and directs NOVA’s nationally-recognized Forensics Team. Prior to coming to NOVA, he held an appointment as assistant professor of communication at California State University-San Bernardino.
Dr. Carter brings significant academic and research experience to his new role as CDEIO. He holds a doctorate in Communication Education and Intercultural Communication from Howard University and has published and presented on the intersection of communication and racial identity, communication within African-American communities, culturally-responsive pedagogies, and the use of technology to mediate intercultural challenges. Dr. Carter also led projects focused on equity in student outcomes and school performance as a senior research and policy associate at the Virginia Department of Education.
The search for NOVA’s CDEIO yielded a very strong slate of internal candidates, and my thanks go out to these colleagues for their commitment to our college and to the important work of diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition, I am grateful to the CDEIO search committee, chaired by Provost Nicole Reaves, for leading an inclusive and successful search.
I know you join me in congratulating Dr. Carter!
