  • Vanessa Diaz – DEI Council programming
  • Nathan Carter – New Chief DEI Officer

Making Equity a Priority – Acknowledging the history of systemic inequality and inequity in Virginia, NOVA has taken a stand for social justice in the College’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement. The work of the College DEI Council is grounded in this statement, providing opportunities and safe spaces for effecting dialogue, learning and collaboration necessary to create a sustainable foundation for turning DEI into practice. Join Vanessa Diaz and Nathan Carter in this session as we share an approach for developing an equity-lens toward collective action.

12 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. – Empathy

  • Cynthia Pascal – Student Support Services
  • Brent Via – Pathway to Baccalaureate

The Value of Empathy – Educators have an obligation to create a learning environment that is committed to excellence and grounded in caring and empathy. To this end, NOVA has realigned several student support areas within the Office of Student Services to enhance the presence of support services while also strengthening program offerings for students, faculty and staff. The Office of Wellness and Mental Health provides assistance, resources, support and interventions for members of the NOVA community in order to positively impact emotional development and healthy social skills and to enhance academic success by focusing on the individual as a whole: mind, body and spirit! The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) provides a safe, inclusive and restorative environment that will nurture all aspects of ethical student development. Learn more about these and other support services available to the NOVA community.

1 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. – Excellence

  • Chris Hafen – Student Personalities
  • Meredith Kintzing – Instructor Self-Reflection

Focusing on the Person(ality) to Aid Student Excellence – This session focuses on the idea that excellence is often about striving to understand students beyond their performance in a course. Chris Hafen will discuss an activity on the Big Five Personality traits (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism). Students complete a measure of the Big 5 and participate in a discussion on how their personality profile impacts their performance in classes at NVCC. Chris will share how he adapted several course assignments to allow for individuals with different personality profiles to excel on assignments.

Meredith Kintzing will discuss instructor self-reflection for excellence, encouraging faculty to think about their own personalities, and to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses throughout the transition to and continuation of remote learning.

2 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. – Evidence

  • Courtney Boland/OIR – Data Coaching Model
  • Tamara Warren Chinyani and Emily Miller –Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)

Data Close to Practice – Aligned with NOVA’s institutional mission and vision, the Data Close to Practice initiative aims to make data available to faculty and staff, and facilitate evidence-based and equity-minded decision making to improve student success outcomes. NOVA’s Data Coaches will build and support a cross-functional, campus/unit-based, team-led process that incorporates data literacy, inquiry and decision-making to support the goal of closing student equity gaps. Through a sustained, multiyear focus on data literacy, NOVA practitioners will build a culture of data inquiry that focuses on the College’s student achievement criteria, student success metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) aimed to advance NOVA’s student success agenda.

NOVA’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) focuses efforts on providing our diverse student population with complete and comprehensive academic support services through equity-based and culturally-inclusive, focused classroom practices and supplemental instruction that can be delivered on campus and virtually. After a thorough review of the evidence-based practices and programs and College student success data that speak to the needs of students inside and outside of the classroom, the College community identified academic success services to ensure our students have access to consistent and essential services to support student learning and student success.

3 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. – Economic/Social Mobility

  • Alex Cooley – Labor Market Data
  • Keri Bowman – Student Financial Stability and Advocacy programs

Supporting Economic and Social Mobility, Challenges and Opportunities – Alex Cooley will provide an overview of prior/current economic data for the Northern Virginia region, including the substantial economic impacts from COVID-19, and the economic outlook for 2021 and beyond. Student Services staff at NOVA are helping address Economic and Social mobility for our students through the Financial Stability and Advocacy Centers. Keri Bowman will outline the various support services provided to empower students and to advance a culture of care at NOVA.
