Top Ten Resources to Support Students Inside and Outside the Classroom

January 8, 2021 / General NOVA News

NOVA Offers many resources to assist students during difficult times as well as in their day-to-day college life. Below are some of these resources that remain in place to help students who are dealing with personal issues, financial crises, looking for ways to network with other students or who need assistance in planning their class schedule. Please share these with your students and direct them as needed.

  1. Financial Stability and Advocacy Centers

NOVA’s Financial Stability and Advocacy Centers help students connect to campus and community services. By ensuring students connect to food, housing, childcare, transportation needs, and healthcare,  students are more likely to succeed in their academics. Visit Financial Stability and Advocacy to learn how to identify and support students in need.

  1. Office of Wellness and Mental Health

The Office of Wellness and Mental Health (formerly known as NOVACares) is a hub for students to connect to resources and services related to wellness and mental health. Visit the OWMH webpage to connect to a number of resources, including a Mental Health Provider Database.

  1. Disability Support Services

Your student discloses they have a disability or should be receiving accommodations, now what? Visit the Office of Disability Support Services to learn how you can ensure an equitable, accessible and inclusive classroom.

  1. Academic Advising

At NOVA, we believe a good advising experience can make or break a student’s success. The responsibility for advising students is shared by all NOVA personnel. 1. Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) provides a safe, inclusive and supportive environment to help students understand how their attitude, conduct and decisions contribute to a quality learning experience. Using restorative student development techniques, OSSR equips students with the knowledge, skills and resources to be successful inside and outside the classroom. Visit the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities to learn more.

  1. The Office of Title IX

Students deserve to feel safe at home, on campus or wherever they may need to be during difficult times. Unfortunately, moving to a remote environment doesn’t mean sexual harassment or violence stops. If a student discloses to you that they have been harassed or assaulted, you are required to report it to The Office of Title IX so that we can connect the student to the supports they need.

  1. Pregnant and Parenting Students

Did you know that pregnant and parenting (dads, too) students are covered by Title IX? Title IX prohibits discrimination against a student based on pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy or recovery from any of these conditions. This means pregnant and parenting students may be eligible for academic accommodations. To support your students, visit https://www.nvcc.edu/titleix/parenting.html.

  1. Student Organizations

Student engagement in clubs and organizations hasn’t stopped just because we transitioned to remote learning. Student organizations at NOVA serve a valuable educational function, offering students the opportunity to join in governmental, cultural, political and/or special interest issues settings and to assume various leadership roles in carrying out the mission of the group. Visit Student Life for more.

  1. Rec on Canvas

Rec on Canvas was created specifically for students to stay engaged and healthy during remote learning and beyond. This platform creates an inclusive environment that inspires, empowers and encourages healthy interaction through active, safe lifestyle opportunities. Spoiler alert, faculty and staff can join Rec on Canvas, too!

  1. Virtual Student Union

The Virtual Student Union (VSU) is a digital hub for students to connect with NOVA and each other without having to physically be on campus. Students can participate in civic-engagement opportunities, lively discussions, development workshops and co-curricular activities, all from the safety of their homes.
