Student Emergency Aid Still Available for Spring 2021

January 11, 2021 / Our Nighthawks

The stresses resulting from the Coronavirus are still very real. Many Americans continue to lose jobs, which then rolls over into housing insecurity, food insecurity and more. NOVA’s students continue to be financially vulnerable amidst this global pandemic. If you know of students in your courses who are suffering from these stresses, please point them to Student Emergency Aid – Northern Virginia Community College (nvcc.edu) to learn more about the spring 2021 CARES Act funding.

Funding provided to NOVA under the CARES Act is available only to current NOVA students who are Title IV eligible and have experienced increased eligible educational expenses due to the impact of COVID-19. Eligible expenses include housing, food, technology for remote learning, childcare and healthcare. Students must also meet the following criteria to be considered for Student Emergency Grants.

For Spring 2021 Awards

  • Students must be enrolled in and attending a minimum of six financial aid-eligible credits to receive a grant.
  • Credits withdrawn before the 15-week term census date and classes dropped before their class census dates will not count.
  • Students who were enrolled in only online classes (E-classes) on March 13, 2020, the date of the National Emergency Declaration, are ineligible for the grant.
  • Tuition, fees and any bookstore charges on the student account for fall and/or spring must be paid or covered by financial aid or a third-party contract before a CARES Act Grant will be awarded.
  • Students cannot owe a debt to NOVA or to another VCCS college.
  • Students who received CARES Act or COVID-19 Student Emergency Grants for spring, summer and/or fall term(s) may reapply for spring 2021 if additional expenses for housing, food, technology for remote learning, childcare or healthcare exist.
  • COVID-19 Grants through the NOVA Foundation, if available again, are limited and will not be given to students who have already received a CARES Act Grant.
