Representation Matters

February 1, 2021 / Uncategorized

As February begins, I wanted to use today’s message to amplify Dr. Carter’s post in the Daily Flyer about NOVA’s virtual celebration of Black History Month, which nationally has the theme: “The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity.” It is an important reminder that representation matters.

When our students see themselves represented at the front of our classrooms, in our curriculum, in leadership roles in higher education and corporate board rooms, as expert researchers and practitioners in STEM and health, as elected leaders in their towns or in Washington, D.C.—it makes a difference. It sends a message: YOU can do this and, perhaps even more importantly, you SHOULD do this.

I was reminded of the power of representation last week in a discussion about ODU’s STEM Takes Flight program, which provides Virginia Community College System students with the chance to conduct paid, hands-on summer research at NASA Langley Research Center or NASA Wallops Flight Facility. Clayton Turner, director of the Langley Research Center, started as a student at Monroe Community College before transferring to the Rochester Institute of Technology; and each year, he meets with the students in the program. He shares his journey so they can see that this pathway is more than possible: it is achievable.

Thank you for all you do to ensure our students see themselves in futures they might never have imagined before coming to NOVA. Your commitment to a NOVA culture grounded in equity, empathy and inclusive excellence supports this month’s events that celebrate, honor and recognize the contributions and achievements of African-Americans. Please look for the updated calendar of activities throughout Black History Month.
