Faculty, Staff Invited to Join History Reading Group
Faculty across all campuses and academic disciplines, and interested NOVA staff, are encouraged to join the History Reading Group begun by Annandale History Professor Nathaniel C. Green. The reading group selects recent studies, especially studies by Black women, focusing on issues of race and slavery. The group meets once every other month (usually on Fridays at 2 p.m.) to discuss the book the group has selected to read. Discussion focuses on how we might use the book to inform our classroom teaching and NOVA’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Friday, April 9, at 2 p.m., the Group will be discussing the book “Slavery at Sea: Terror, Sex and Sickness in the Middle Passage,” by Sowande’ M. Mustakeem.
Dr. Mustakeem teaches in the Department of History and the African and African American Studies Program at Washington University in St. Louis. We are delighted to share that Dr. Mustakeem has agreed to join us for our discussion of her book. It promises to be a great discussion.
Dr. Mustakeem’s book is available for purchase through the University of Illinois Press website Here. It is also available in electronic form Here through NOVA Libraries.
All interested faculty and staff should reach out to Dr. Green at ncgreen@nvcc.edu to participate in History Reading Group. Of course, anyone interested in participating must read the book.
