An Assistant Professor of World and African History at NOVA, Kathleen Fichtel graduated with her Ph.D. in History from West Virginia University (WVU) in 2013. Her dissertation is a study of British forestry policies and practices in Malawi (then the Nyasaland Protectorate) from 1890 – 1964. She chose her topic while accompanying Dr. Joseph Hodge, Professor of History at WVU and her advisor, on a research trip to Malawi in 2008. The trip was supported by a National Science Foundation grant. The research team focused on examining the relationship between land use and livelihood in the Mulanje region, and how that relationship is being altered by climate change. While at WVU, her major fields of study were the History of the British Empire, African History, World History and Geography. After graduation, she held a post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. Robert Jones, then-Provost of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at WVU. During her fellowship, she focused on the history of ecology and the origins of the Ecological Society of America. Following the completion of her fellowship, Kathleen was hired for her current position at NOVA in 2015. She currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia with her two cats, Olive and Pickle.
